Aural & gustatory delights

Many a day was spent at the bach/beach immersed in blue waters, reading Time magazine, cooking lamb cutlets (and more) and sleeping in until 11am.
I jumped aboard the summer festival bandwagon - BDO and Laneway - where rain seemed to be a recurrent theme, but in a positive way. Nothing like dancing to Ed Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros’ Home with large, soft drops of January rain giving my silk chiffon singlet the delicate wash it demands. Again at Laneway, the sky opened up during Norway by Baltimore’s dreamy lush-pop magic that is Beach House and again during Foals’ set - the latter who saw the lead nail the opening to Spanish Sahara and got the crowd feeling pretty euphoric/nostalgic/a combination of both. Prior to Beach House, Yeasayer played a great set. Pure energy. Deerhunter and earlier acts were all great in their own right but it was those final three sets which had me so entranced.

Food I have eaten recently
(both purchased and homemade):

potato rosti, goats’ milk feta, spinach, smoked salmon, poached egg stack whilst looking fondly towards Rangitoto

cinnamon & gingerbread icecream

tequila, where any quantity is too much

a mint trumpet, a childhood favourite whose return I have finally embraced

Otto Woo spicy squid salad

focaccia dotted with cherry tomatoes and rosemary, which was then slathered with harissa hummus

dolmades

whitebait fritters, served with a huge salad and a tangy blend of lemon-dill mustard & mayonnaise

peach crumble

cucumber sandwiches

the Christmas tiramisu, recreated just because

buffalo mozzarella, accompanied by fresh basil, juicy tomatoes and drizzled with olive oil

thai green curry with tofu, alongside several glasses of wine (good night, followed by a queasy morning)

bacon, red onion and red capsicum risotto

tom yum goong (the thai-byo-buzz continues!).

Life is sweet.

Tumeric

An essential ingredient for the perfect potato and pea curry.

Also great for colouring playdough, though I won’t be trying that one anytime soon.

Geeky Quote of the Day: “Nor is it accurate to refer to such a vendor as a ‘trustee sub modo’ unless the disarming mystique of the added Latin is treated as a warrant for essential misdescription.”

Disarming mystique! The legal version of ‘cellar door’ for all those Donnie Darko fans out there. Almost as beautiful sounding as the slide-off-your-tounge charm of ‘aquiesence’.
